Port Seton Widow
John Bellany

This classic Bellany was bought directly from the artist by the previous owner. The artist himself had not come up with a name for the painting, but various distinctive elements - the starveling child and skinny baby lower left; the coffin-shaped object to the right of the female figure; and the female figure with her hard, sad expression - reflect Bellany's oft-expressed preoccupation with death, danger and loss at sea, which constantly beset the coastal fishing community of Port Seton where he grew up.
