This study in pencil on buff paper was acquired by the artist Stan Smith when he was Head of Fine Art at the Ruskin School in Oxford.
The paper shows some inevitable signs of its vintage (as shown in the photo) but these are minor and the drawing is a fine example of Alma Tadema's deft draughtsmanship.
The artist has added a pencilled note that just beneath the signature that - though difficult to discern clearly - could be read as "from Porcine" or maybe "from Poussin". (If some well informed person out there has a better suggestion, we would be delighted to hear from them.)
