Chateau de Vincelles
George Hooper

The vivid colour and tropical ambience of Hooper's painting suggest a warm, Mediterranean location. In fact the Chateau de Vincelles is located further north. In the early 19th century it became the home of Madame de Stael, the French writer and commentator whose political writings irritated Napoeon Bonaparte so much that he banned her from living anywhere "within 40 leagues of Paris".
